Bank balance friendly kitchen flooring options

17 March 2014

Your kitchen is one of the most expensive rooms in the house to find appropriate flooring for. It needs to be more hardwearing than the sorts of materials you would be able to use in most other rooms, as well as being slip proof and water resistant.

Unless you are beyond the realms of domestic god or goddess, you’ll find that things will get spilt, muddy little feet will trample their way through, and things get dropped. If they didn’t, you could probably have a cream carpet in your cooking area, but as it is, that would probably be just about the worst possible choice you make.

Choosing the right type of flooring to fulfil your needs isn’t the easiest thing to do, but when you look at all the options, it might become a little bit clearer. Consider which kind of look you’re trying to achieve, and how long you want the flooring to last for before you get started, and then pick a flooring!

When you need to get all these things done on a budget, research becomes your best friend. You can save a lot of money by making the right choice first time, and while it might be difficult to fulfil all the criteria, you can have a good shot at it. So cheap vinyl flooring, tiles or concrete? Where do you start?

Tiles

There’s all sorts of different kinds of tiles you can use in a kitchen, but they’re also one of the more expensive options. Ceramic can look incredible. There’s a lot of variety too, because you don’t have to lay tiles of the same colour or the same pattern; you can create your own designs. As they all need to be laid individually it can be time consuming, and for the cost you might decide that it’s just not worth it.

Cork

Cork is a natural insulator and it’s also water resistant. It might not look the most appealing, but it can certainly be installed on a budget. As a very cheap option it can be perfect for people trying to save a few pennies after a renovation, and then further down the line when you have some more finances available you could replace the cork with a longer lasting option such as cheap vinyl flooring tiles or sheeting.
Because cork can be harvested without the need for deforestation, it is a highly sustainable option.

Concrete

Concrete flooring doesn’t need to be as boring and grey as you might think. It can be stained and polished to give it a less industrial feel. It ends up looking something like polished stone but at a fraction of the cost. Of course, it’s not as warm as some of the other options, and by its very nature it is extremely hard – which can be both a blessing and a curse.

Vinyl

Cheap vinyl flooring is an excellent option for any kitchen. It’s long lasting, which means that you’ll get great value for money. The slightly more expensive options will offer thicker padding which gives a more comfortable feel underfoot, and can improve soundproofing. It’s moved on from the days when you could have any colour so long as it was orange. There’s all sorts of choses when it comes to cheap vinyl flooring, from tiles to sheet, so there’s something to suit everyone.
At its most basic, it is by far the cheapest and most effective form of flooring you can find for a kitchen. It ticks all the boxes, and you won’t need to compromise on anything.
