Optimistic outlook in new flooring survey (12/10/10)

12 October 2010
The report on the UK floor coverings market in 2010 concentrates on the domestic sector. It reckons that the recession of 2008 and 2009 cost the industry around £400m. Some product sectors saw sales declines of up to 20%. It was only thanks to public spending schemes such as Building Schools for Future and Kickstart which prevented the floor coverings industry from declining even further last year.

Despite a fragile recovery in consumer confidence, the proposed 25% cut in the public sector spending is likely to dampen short term growth prospects for sales of floor coverings, says the MTW report.
Growth forecasts, it says, are subdued for the rest of 2010 and the first half of 2011. Nevertheless, the report identifies a number of key opportunities for growth, highlighting scope for optimism within the carpets, wood and ceramic tile flooring sectors.

Remland Carpets has learnt that the following are forecast to be the market share of flooring products by 2014: Carpets at 61%, laminate/woods at 26%, Stone, Vinyl, Lino, others at as little as 4% and Ceramic Tile at 9%.
