Time to Restore your Furniture!

Get your wood up to scratch
Unsightly marks on wood used to mean the end for your furniture but now you can disguise those scratches with a "touch-up" pen. This will cover the scuffs and marks that look so unsightly, and is available from most hardware stores. To give your wooden furniture a facelift, apply beeswax polish on a wire brush and sweep against the grain.

Revive with modern touches
You can revive old furniture by simply replacing or updating one item. Handles can be changed to revamp cupboards, wardrobes and even doors without actually getting rid of the whole thing. Maybe you could change the whole piece to match your decor or just go for a more modern style to give your furniture a whole new look. The same can be said for adding a new cushions or extra padding to a sofa or chair. If you have a lamp you love but can't bear to throw away, replace the shade with a similar one and keep the stand – it will instantly look like new.

Give furniture a new lease on life
Faded furniture doesn't need to be thrown away. Instead, strip it back and start again. If the base of the object is still sound and really all it needs is a facelift, don't be afraid to have a go. What about re-upholstering old chairs and seats in a more modern and vibrant material for an entire new suite. Remember to add extra padding as the cushion may have sagged over the years.
Wooden furniture can be given a whole new lease of life by stripping the varnish off. If it is in need of repair, add more support and then decorate how you please. Painted wood in a French, rustic style has become very fashionable and you could even resell it.

Give it a personal touch
If a piece of furniture cannot be saved then what about concealing the cracks with a personal touch? Covering an old coffee table can be a great way to revive old furniture. Adding tiles or even gluing photos or posters on the surface then placing a clear durable cover over the top can be a quirky addition to your room and bring an old piece of furniture back to life.

Brush away the past
It might sound simple but by giving your furniture some real love and attention you can really bring it back to life. Cleaning upholstery with a white cloth and soap solution carefully and slowly will instantly brighten it. Remember that the material is delicate, so for a really deep clean perhaps take that piece of furniture out of use for a week while you go over it and let it recover. Tonic water can help remove tougher stains. There are many specialist cleaning solutions available in hardware shops for reviving furniture.

Keep it looking new
Once you have spent time updating or reviving your furniture don't let it fall into that state again. To protect your furniture try at least once a week to give it a dust down or clean. A damp cloth run over upholstered furniture will keep it looking fresher for longer. Avoid furniture fading by keeping it at least two feet away from a radiator and direct sunlight. Apply protector to wooden furniture at least once a year, or when is recommended to avoid woodworm. Beeswax is a simple solution to prevent this. Throws on sofas and chairs can be a great way to keep wear and tear on your furniture to a minimum; they can be easily replaced and are cheaper than getting an entire new suite.

On the move
Keep moving your furniture around the room or even the house. Changing its space means that it is less likely to become forgotten about, and moving environments will even give your furniture a rest. A chair that has been placed near a fire or next to a window will enjoy a break in a cooler and less exposed area of your home. It will also make you more considerate about your furniture.
