Benefits of Hard Wearing Carpets
When you’re choosing a new carpet, most people don’t look for practical benefits. Usually, the focus is on what looks good in their home, but there are some perks of buying hard wearing carpets that you didn’t know you wanted! You don’t want to buy a product that you’re going to have to replace in a couple of months, especially when it’s a big purchase like a carpet. That’s why you can trust us to provide you with superior quality heavy duty carpets, perfect for high-footfall areas of your home, be it a hall or stairway.
As well as this, you’ll find that all of our hard wearing carpets are easy to clean. We do the thinking for you and have made sure that all of the carpets we sell won't have you on your hands and knees scrubbing away for hours on end - with most of our styles only needing a quick vacuum and shampoo, forget the hard work that’s associated with other styles of flooring! Make sure to check the cleaning instructions for your specific carpet before trying to clean.
Wear ratings explained
Every carpet sold in the UK carries a wear rating under BS EN 1307, which categorises fibre performance against typical traffic levels. The classes most relevant to domestic and light commercial buyers are:
- Class 21 - General domestic, moderate use. Bedrooms, studies, guest rooms. Not recommended for stairs or hallways.
- Class 22 / 22+ - General domestic, intense use. Living rooms, dining rooms, family bedrooms. The most common domestic rating.
- Class 23 - Heavy domestic. Stairs, hallways, landings and anywhere that sees daily footfall with shoes on. This is the minimum rating we'd recommend for main traffic routes in a family home.
- Class 31-33 - General to heavy commercial. Meeting rooms, small offices, light-use commercial spaces. Often overkill for domestic bedrooms but a sensible choice for a home office that sees daily wheeled-chair use, or a holiday let that turns over weekly.
A Class 23 rating carpet in a well-used hallway should deliver 12-18 years before it starts to show. A Class 22+ in a bedroom should comfortably last 15+ years. For spill and mark resistance alongside durability, pair your chosen wear rating with a stain-resistant fibre (see our stain-resistant carpet range).

FAQs
How long should a hard-wearing carpet last?
A properly specified hard-wearing carpet should last 10-20 years depending on the fibre and wear rating. A Class 23 wool-blend in a family hallway typically lasts 12-15 years before replacement. A commercially rated polypropylene can last 18-20+ years. Thin doormats, heavy sun exposure, and poor-quality underlay all shorten these ranges - entrance matting and a 10mm+ PU underlay are the two cheapest ways to add years to any carpet's life.
Is wool or synthetic more hard-wearing?
Both are hard-wearing, but in different ways. Wool resists crushing and bounces back from furniture marks better than any synthetic - it's the most durable option for appearance retention. Solution-dyed polypropylene and nylon resist stains, fading and moisture better than wool, and handle wheeled traffic more gracefully. For the best of both, choose an 80/20 wool-nylon blend - 80% wool for feel and crush resistance, 20% nylon for extra strength at the wear points.
